Why is Graduate Work Experience so important? According to an industry report that surveyed 149 financial & accountancy industry employers in the UK, professional qualification, relevant work experience & strong communication skills are the top three most important ‘assets’ that an entry-level candidate must have. And that of course, is true of the Australian market too.
With many Graduates joining the employment pool at the moment, it is a real buyers’ market and those with relevant work experience tend to get snapped up first. One of the most important qualities that employers look for is a candidate’s aptitude and motivation. If a Graduate has shown some enthusiasm and initiative in actively seek out potential (and relevant) work experience – be it paid employment, an internship or voluntary work – so much the better. Graduate work experience can make all the difference!
Soft skills such as communication, people skills and teamwork are also rated highly by those surveyed, and these skills should be featuring prominently in a Graduate Resume, particularly as the work experience is likely to be limited. Make the most of your current ‘assets’ because the market has many candidates to choose from!
